This year, Nicole H. Naum, Esq. and Lili M. O’Connell, Esq. of Battlefield Law Group were honored to mentor two of the award recipients, guiding them through scholarship applications, college selection, and the first steps of adult life. Hearing their stories of perseverance reminds us why community engagement is a cornerstone of our practice.
Every spring, the Prince William County Bar Foundation’s Beat the Odds® program shines a spotlight on students whose lives have been anything but easy. Whether facing homelessness, family instability, or serious illness, these young scholars refuse to let their circumstances define them. Instead, they excel in school, volunteer in their communities, and set bold goals for college and beyond.
What Is Beat the Odds?
Founded by the Prince William County Bar Foundation (PWCBF), Beat the Odds identifies local students who have:
Demonstrated academic promise despite extreme personal challenges
Shown leadership or service within Prince William County
Expressed clear post-secondary goals (trade school, two-year, or four-year college)
Winners receive scholarships, laptops, and year-round mentoring, powerful tools that turn ambition into achievement.

By mentoring Beat the Odds scholars, our attorneys extend that mission beyond the courtroom—investing in young people who innovate, inspire, and uplift their communities.
