Advancing DUI Defense Through Continuing Education
As we continue to push the boundaries of cutting-edge DUI defense in Virginia, advanced training and continuing education remain central to our approach. At Battlefield Law Group, we are committed to going beyond conventional defense strategies, continually strengthening our understanding of DUI science, investigative procedures, and the evidence that can make a difference in the courtroom.
From September 24–26, 2026, Lynchburg attorney Robert “Rob” Yurkowski attended the National College for DUI Defense's three-day Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course in Charleston, South Carolina. Through hands-on training, Rob examined the science and procedures behind the three standardized field sobriety tests: Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Walk-and-Turn, and One-Leg Stand.
Did you know that the number of clues an officer identifies during a DUI field sobriety test could raise questions about the reliability of the results?
During the HGN eye test, officers look for six possible clues of impairment, three in each eye. Because these findings are generally expected to be consistent between the eyes, an odd number of clues can raise questions about a potential medical condition, improper testing procedures, or an officer's interpretation of the evidence.
These are precisely the kinds of details that matter when scrutinizing DUI investigations and challenging the Commonwealth's case.
Continuing education is an investment in our clients. By continually strengthening our knowledge of DUI science and law enforcement procedures, we are better equipped to identify weaknesses in the evidence, challenge assumptions, and build strategic, trial-ready defenses.
Investing in Knowledge, Strengthening Our Defense
Throughout the year, our attorneys participate in advanced DUI and criminal defense continuing legal education (CLE) programs to sharpen their skills, stay current with evolving Virginia laws, and deepen their understanding of forensic science, investigative procedures, and emerging defense strategies. This ongoing investment in education strengthens our ability to deliver strategic, informed, and trial-ready representation to our clients.
